Designed by Madrid based architects Selgascano,  the El “B”  auditorium and performing arts complex located along the waterfront of Cartagena, Spain, was completed in late 2011. This  210m long low lying structure was inspired by the industrial heritage of the city and forms part of the transformation of the waterfront promenade.

Built of aluminium and plastic, the linear shapes mirror the lines of the promenade. A variety of transparencies in subtle pastel shades soften the geometric lines of the structure. The interior is a mass of contradicting layers and stairs. Bright colours are used in multiple ways on metal, walls and seating arrangements which range from groups of benches to contemporary stools and hanging pods.

The shimmering aquatic surfaces of the walls of the multi-purpose auditoriums give the impression of being underwater and reflect the location of the complex. A roof terrace provides a space for relaxation with uninterrupted sea views. The contradiction of the industrial exterior and the transparencies and pastels of the interior provide an ideal balance of location and purpose of the venue.
