The recently opened subway station serving Hafencity University in Hamburg was designed by Raupach Architekten. A well designed, ergonomic space, the subway station was brought to life by the intervention of Pfarre Lighting Design firm.

Drawing on the concept of steel, light, colour and reflection, indicative of the industrial harbourside location, Pfarre designed a series of huge boxes, each one the exact measurement  of a shipping container, and suspended them from the ceiling of the subway platform. The metal framed translucent boxes contain numerous LED lights which are programmed to change colour.

Brilliant shades of blue, orange, purple and red illuminate the space, bringing an unexpected dimension to a traditionally lifeless area. The light boxes may be individually lit or synchronized to herald a train, celebrate an event or simply improve the mood of the tired commuter.
