Hewlett Street House is a design project by the practice of MPR Design Group. Situated on a tiered site overlooking Bronte Beach, the futuristic tubular design makes a strong statement against the traditional architecture of the neighboring houses. Within this ultra-contemporary design, the architect drew inspiration from the forms and angles found in nature, as in the facade of sharply angles shapes which mirror the irregular branches of the native eucalyptus tree.
The deliberately daring sculptural form of the residence explores the concept of ‘prospect and refuge’. Prospect relates to the upper level of the structure, a communal space which points towards the panoramic view of Bronte Beach. Refuge is seen in the middle level, the private spaces, each one with its independent aspect.
The stunning interior is flooded in natural daylight through the vast transparencies and skylights fitted throughout the space. In particular, a circular skylight above the stairwell illuminates the spiral staircase and reaches down to the lower level where an unexpected organic aspect is introduced into the home through the natural bedrock which adopts the identity of an art installation. The dark flooring connects the interior with the outdoor garden, deck and secure pool area.
