When faced with a tiny plot of land perched on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Japanese city of Nagoya, the D.I.G. team of architects had no choice but to dig away into the cliff to provide a base for their ingenious structure.

The windowless facade of the entrance to the house is at street level and once inside, a metal staircase leads down to the main volume, which sits on the excavated part of the hillside. The deck is a overhanging section, with an entirely glazed facade, providing a panoramic view of the city spread out at the foot of the cliff. The whole of the 89,4 sq.metres of living space is covered by a multi-faceted origami shaped roof, resembling a sail billowing in the wind, the inspiration of the designers.

This compact structure provides the owners with everything they desired, a space which is part of nature within an urban lifestyle.
