The planks of recycled wood on the facade of the single family structure in the ski resort of Kitzbuehel in the Austrian Alps give the impression of an average rural dwelling, on closer look however, it is apparent that this is an exceptional example of contemporary architecture in a traditional rural setting.

Designed by Splendid Architecture, Kitzbuehel Mansion is set on a raised platform of a steep slope and is comprised of two wings united by a glass atrium. The living and sleeping quarters are defined by each wing and the inspiration comes from a log of wood split into two by the woodcutter’s axe, with a fire in the center.

Curtainless expanses of glazing permit spectacular alpine views and total enjoyment of the rural surrounds. Special attention has been paid to the interior design and furnishings of the 530 sqm space, in particular the outstanding opulence of the light fittings. Every piece of custom built furniture was designed or sourced by Splendid Architecture, from the mirrored fronts of the kitchen cabinets down to the last spoon in the kitchen drawer.
