In a corner building of the historic Aldwych crescent, an area which represents a symbolic borderline between the West End and the City of London, the ME Hotel, a project undertaken by the practice of Foster + Partners, has opened its doors. The exterior and interior of this 5 star establishment was designed in its entirety by Foster + Partners, the first project of this nature to be handled by the practice.

The facade of Portland stone perfectly merges with the neighbouring buildings on the Aldwych, many of which have undergone recent restoration. The interior layout is created around a marble clad pyramid cone, its impressive form creating a void 9 stories high, adding a theatrical element to design concept. The entrance leads into the lounge bar and restaurant, a welcoming warm space which directs the visitor to a lift to the reception desk on the first floor. Here, as in the 157 rooms and suites, understated elegance in clean minimal lines presents a face of sophistication  through the use of luxury materials.

The guest rooms are defined by the white leather walls and rich lacquered cabinetry with onyx shelves which conceal the entertainment centre and bar. The en-suite bathrooms are clad in sumptuous white marble and fittings custom designed by the practice. A Yin-Yang philosophy has been adopted throughout with constant instances of white on black and black on white, creating a cohesive harmony within the spaces. The suites are on the upper levels with a spectacular duplex which has been designed in the final two floors of the corner tower. A bar and lounge area is to be found on the roof garden, an enviable space which enjoys breathtaking views of the London skyline.
