In Clifton, Cape Town, South Africa, the architects, Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects// SAOTA, had the advantage of a dream location for this project, a site situated between the verdant mountains of Cape Town and the Atlantic Ocean. An existing five storey property was totally remodeled and two additional levels were built to provide a six bedroom home for the clients. The dark aluminum walls of the street facing facade ensure that the structure does not impose in any way on its surroundings. On entering the residence, the severity of the facade melts away in the wood clad circular lobby, illuminated by an imposing glass light installation in bright aqua.

On the upper levels, the views tell the story, a transparent facade with stunning vistas of the ocean, visible from every angle. The climate plays a vital role in the innovative design of the indoor, outdoor living areas. The flexibility of the space allows the creation of a virtual ‘pavilion’, when the sliding windows are opened in the living room which overlooks an infinity pool, garden, deck and outdoor dining area. Similarly, the blinds and shutters are able to create a shady respite from the glaring sunlight when required.

The materials used are wood, glass and marble in the stunningly elegant interior of this contemporary design enhanced by the simplicity of the furnishings by OKHA.
