On a hill in the village of Vilallonga de Ter in the Girona region of Spain, an old stone built farmhouse and stables have been converted into a family home by architect Ferran Lopez Roca. Keeping in mind the rustic heritage and idyllic location of the house, the architects and client wished to preserve the sense of belonging inherent within its old walls and incorporate this into its new identity.

The exterior walls of stone and mud have been left intact together with the original openings but have been given an extra layer of insulation on the interior in order to improve energy efficiency. In the main volume, the stone facing of the walls and exposed beams of reclaimed wood strike a rustic note against the well-chosen elegant furnishings in the living room, dining room, kitchen and two bathrooms. The next volume houses two bedrooms and bathrooms and the upper loft space contains a series of rooms including the master bedroom and bathroom.

Add to this the garage and tremendous views of the surrounding country landscape, this old stone farmhouse has been reinvented into a comfortable family home which is the epitome of rustic elegance.
