An increasing number of areas in London are in need of regeneration with more sustainable housing options. The ever changing needs of the communities in these areas has brought about the search for alternative accommodation schemes, one of which is the project of Carl Turner Architects, Slip House.

So called because of the irregular placing of the 3 boxes which go to make up the prefabricated home, Slip House is a structure which not only fits into small spaces but also has a high level of adaptability  in terms of living requirements. The design incorporates the option of a retail outlet or workshop being accommodated on the ground level of the three level building, bringing the home and work environment  together. The rectangular boxes are load bearing allowing complete freedom for the positioning of room dividers inside.

A translucent glass shell on the facade continues above the third floor level, creating a roof terrace as well as providing privacy and insulation for the home. At night, the house shines like a beacon through its glass shell.

This alternative form of budget housing incorporates the best of contemporary design capable of adjusting to any environment, with the status of being one of the most sustainable forms of home in Great Britain, holding a Level 5 certificate.
