This fantastic underground residence, set amongst a group of mountain homes in the Swiss village of Vals, is certainly their equal in terms of spectacular mountain views and comfort. Designed by the Dutch firm SeArch in collaboration with Christian Muller Architects, the project received full support of the local authorities in spite of its proximity to the famed thermal springs of the region.

Access to the house is by steps leading up to the egg like opening in the hillside or alternatively, via an underground passage from a nearby barn. The facade of stone and glass ensure that the interior receives the maximum amount of natural daylight and a framed view of the distant snowcapped mountains.

A wide courtyard for outdoor dining and an interior of concrete, stone and wood make this a viable alternative to the conventional residence, especially in an area with planning restrictions. A truly wonderful example of ‘pragmatic unobtrusive development in a sensitive area.’
