In one of the most ancient cities of China, the international chain of Westin have opened a luxury hotel of massive proportions. Designed by the Shanghai based practice of Neri &  Hu, the 300 room establishment reflects the heritage and energy of this historic region. Within its contemporary design, the lines of traditional Chinese architecture is apparent, the sloping roofs and central courtyards and the bold details of red, all reflect the local typologies.

The five storey hotel is faced in stucco and dark stone presenting a powerful bulk inspired by the mass of this walled city. Within sight of the famed Giant Wild Goose Pagoda and close to the site of the Ancient Terracotta Warriors, it comes as no surprise that the impressive cultural aspect of the area is referenced in the underground museum of the hotel.

The designers have done their utmost to ensure that, in addition to every aspect of Western comfort, they have brought the most ‘spiritual functions in Chinese architecture’ to the fore when carrying out this project, in order to allow all who stay at the hotel the enjoyment of a unique cultural experience.
