Melvin Light is one of the world’s smallest Rube Goldberg (chain reaction) machines, recently created by the HEYHEYHEY design team. This project follows their initial Melvin the Machine venture, a huge installation created for the 2009 Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven.

Melvin Light, like his big Brother, has an online non-human identity but this time he is portable, instead of a room, Melvin Light has been built in two old suitcases, packed and ready for a future of world travel. When visiting a new destination, he ‘signs’ and stamps a postcard as he becomes a virtual tourist, taking photographs of the sights and the people he ‘meets’. Melvin identifies his whereabouts by means of a GPS and communicates online through the medium of a smartphone incorporated within his mechanism.
