‘Pinned Up’ - a daring title for this upcoming, groundbreaking exhibition! It conjures up thoughts of a rare specimen, a creature pinned to a board, restrained for closer examination under a microscope; awaiting judgement through scrutinization and at the same time enhancing our knowledge of this subject.
Few designers would put themselves out there, body and soul, but of course Marcel Wanders is no run of the mill designer! During his remarkable career which covers almost three decades, he has grown from an avant-garde ‘wunderkind’ to the charismatic superstar he is today! The exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the first major event since its recent renovation, fills a mind boggling 1.000 sq.m. space with hundreds of exhibits which tell the story of the varied career of Mr. Wanders. The items exhibited vastly differ and include furniture, lamps, utensils, cutlery, wallpaper, packaging, jewelry and interiors, and so much more.
Over three distinctly defined ‘zones’, a retrospective of the designer’s colourful career is explained in great detail, including his business acumen which has resulted in his executive positions and part ownership in Moooi and other design firms. With an impressive portfolio of clients too numerous to mention, his professional achievements would fill a library of books. It is to his credit that through his own design practice, a thriving organization with a staff of fifty, he has provided a platform for the emergence of many newcomers to the world of design including names such as Bertjan Pot and Maarten Baas. The man is unstoppable, his work constantly enthralls with his innovative energy and insight into what’s hot and what’s not!
This exciting event will run from February 1st through June 15th 2014 and is a must for his followers and fans and perhaps a good excuse for a trip to Amsterdam in the Spring of 2014!
