The prestigious international Bronze 'A’Design Award 2013' was recently won by  the Athens based design group of Urban Fiction for the design of their floor lamp, ‘Urbanoids’. From 2008, the members of the group, Giannis Siotis, Marilena Karagkiozi and Kanella Vlachou have been active in the design and creation of jewellery and other objects.

The design for their elegant floor lamp emerged from an extended period of experimentation into the creation of an object through a combination of hand crafting and technology and by using natural and industrial materials. The realization of the lamp developed from this ongoing exploration together with an innovative lamination process, and finally computer software.

Constructed from 51 pairs of plywood strips formed with cascamite together with an aluminium base, the finished piece measures 280x180x25 cm, a considerable size for an object which could also double as a room divider or as a lamp in a commercial property. An integral aspect of this design is to bring awareness to the theme of opposing elements of humanity and nature and the need for the two to coexist within an urban environment.
