Marni’s collection for Fall/Winter 2013 was a hybrid of romance and austerity, a “new atmosphere” in the words of the house’s designer Consuelo Castiglioni. This antithesis was evident throughout the show’s monochromatic palette of strict, angular shapes softened by luxurious fur found anywhere from hemlines to stoles to gloves, bags and capelettes and boots. Wherever fur was missing the masculine looks were still softened; leather was mixed with lush velvet, the hard edges of the clothes were feminized by organza details and boxy shaped looks were made out of brushed mohair. What was harsh to the eye was soft to the touch. This hybrid new atmosphere had us immediately hooked in the mood for romantic and austere.
