An extensive renovation project entailing the transformation of an industrial space in the heart of Barcelona into a warm, home environment was undertaken by the practice of  TC-Interiors. The Communicating Vessels conversion, as with most projects of this type posed a challenge for the designers in terms of dimensions, in this case a long narrow interior which became quite narrow in places. In most loft conversions careful attention must also be paid to the furniture chosen as it is very easy to become overpowered by the dynamics of the space.

In order to create a blank canvas and follow the open continuous space requested by the client, most internal walls were demolished and by using a geometric approach of levels and angles, each area was defined by custom made furniture and a sophisticated method of lighting. The Lighting Carpets consist of lighting units suspended from the high ceiling to visually create a space of purpose, a suggestion of activity. As such, the study/working zone is easily separated from the living zone and kitchen, which required further definition through the essential cabinets and counter space.

The bedroom stands on a platform accessible up a short flight of steps, while being in an open area, its position awards it a sense of privacy. Elements of the industrial heritage of the structure have been retained in the exposed brickwork, vents, ceiling beams and wiring and supplemented by a soft neutral color palette and rich dark brown woodwork. It is this aesthetic of contrasts in textures and surfaces, light and dark shades which characterize the space, a stunning conversion project which makes the best use of space and materials.
