The refurbishment of a small square-shaped loft in the old town of Kiev was the first interior design project for Ukrainian architect, Alex Bykov. This unique yet extremely space-efficient interior was to be the home for a newly-married couple, for whom he created the concept of ‘Constant Motion’.

As the kitchen, a place of warmth and nurturing is the symbolic heart of every home, it became the physical central feature of the design with the surrounding spaces allocated to the bedroom, living room, library and bathroom. This way allowing a natural flow within the loft, enhanced by the custom designed furniture and intelligent storage solutions.

The defining element of the design was the raised platform which houses the library, prominent on the wish list of the young couple. This generous space was fitted with modular geometric units, with an inherent flexibility enabling their formation into a number of configurations, highlighted by the black outlining on the edges of the shelves. Only two doors exist within the loft, the bathroom and bedroom, both of which have windows on the upper part of the wall, visually permitting the concept of continuity within the entire loft space.

The entire refurbishment followed a tight budget plan throughout and simple basic materials of plywood, chipboard and recycled bricks. While similar in color, their innovative use, such as the plywood faced wall, and diversity in texture made for an amazingly warm, cozy, yet contemporary interior.
