Located in San Paulo, Brazil, the FJ House project by the young design team of Studio Guilherme Torres constitutes a radical design intervention on the interior of a 1980s apartment. The entire space was gutted and new rooms were created in accordance with the needs of the client, a young, single entrepreneur and DJ.

The walls were treated with a concrete like surface and some of the windows were concealed in line with a ‘concrete box’ concept, relieved by the strip and concealed led lighting units fitted into the surfaces, resulting in an intimate night club effect. The entry to the apartment is directly from the lift into an open plan living space furnished a laid back 1970s mode of contrasting surfaces and textures. The subtle pastel shades of the sofa on a shag carpet stands against a background of a metal folding ladder which is reinvented as a DJ station. The playful elements of adult toys and colorful books distributed throughout the rooms stand out near the elegant shiny kitchen units with bespoke wooden furniture created by the designers. All of this, together with a scattering of vintage pieces culminates in a unique aesthetic which contributes to the ‘high-low’ identity of the space - a combination of high grade artistic elements with low level cost.

A slightly hedonistic touch is the black bathtub inside the Master bedroom, a reminder of the masculinity of the design of this cool, trendy interior for the client who wants to live with everything at hand to enhance his lifestyle as a bachelor about town!
