The humble Chippy has been elevated to gourmet status. The traditional fast food of the UK, fish and chips, has in the past been served in mainly uninspired establishments. Recently though, following the trend for heritage and respect for the much loved dish, Kerbisher & Malt opened a small eat in/takeaway restaurant in Hammersmith, West London.

They have now opened their second chippy in Ealing, larger than the first, and have once again, invited Alexander Evangelou and James Waterworth of Alexander Waterworth Interiors to refurbish the premises.

A bright, clean welcoming space with painted concrete and white tiles on the walls, a notice board announces the menu and a distinctive Fresh Fish Daily sign is inspired by the graphics seen on a San Francisco pier. The wooden floor is painted in a black and white diamond pattern, seen by the designers in Sweden, which resembles tiles. A young modern note is the choice of blue and red furniture and the light fixtures. The space is a design continuity of their original shop with an extension on the concept of a space which is ‘fresh, informal and fun.’ Michelin chef Heston Blumenthal considers that this is an eatery which ‘takes the very essence of a chippy and makes it so much better.’
