An inspirational interior design project was recently undertaken by the Athens based practice of ESE Studio in a well-located apartment by the ring road of Lycabettus hill in Athens. The two level residence is in the fortunate position of appearing to be surrounded by nature which visually enters the space.

An open plan design, the functions of the lower public area are defined by the different levels of raised floors of fine oak. The extensive use of wood within the design presents a retro feel of warmth and harmony which contrasts with the simplicity of its minimal design aesthetic and neutral color palette. Stairs lead up to the private space containing the open plan bedroom, bathroom and office. The bed placed on a wooden platform with built in shelving continues the general element of extensive storage created throughout the apartment. A simple bathroom with transparent surround accompanies the bed on the platform, an unusual yet practical feature. The small office space has wooden steps which lead to an outdoor terrace with exceptional views of the parkland of Lycabettus.

The somber masculinity of this outstanding interior exudes a strictly urban vibe which is lightened by the ingenious addition of fun, colorful objects such as the bright red ‘knitted’ clock which sits at the head of the bed, the red metal lamp in the office, the pretty aqua 1950s metal framed tub chair and colorful cushions in the living room. A stunning interior in a space which defies the reality of its location and dimensions, an excellent design project by Sotos Mallas and Aaron Ritenour of ESE Studio.
