The Movement Cafe in Greenwich was designed and built by artist Morag Myerscough with assistance from Luke Morgan. Amazingly enough, the folksy style 140 sq.m. space, with its outdoor amphitheater style seating was erected in just 16 days, ready to welcome the stream of visitors to the Olympic venues in the Borough of Greenwich.

The artist not only designed the furniture but built it from reclaimed materials which she then painted with brightly colored patterns. The inspiration for her work was a poem by Lemn Sissay, the words of which are incorporated in the form of bold graphics and on the wooden fence surrounding the cafe. In addition to selling locally sourced produce, the amphitheater will be used for acoustic performances, storytelling and poetry reading.

All profits of the place, which is run by Greenwich Co-operative Development Agency, will go towards assisting their work with disadvantaged communities in the London area. The scheme will run for 6 months, after which time, it will be dismantled and the materials recycled in another project. In its place, community oriented programs and businesses will be established in an effort to encourage a more sustainable lifestyle for the local community.
