A recent project undertaken by the Athens based practice of K-Studio is the interior of a new high end Japanese restaurant and bar in Kifissia, a northern suburb of Athens. The transformation of a large, double height space into an intimate evening to late night destination presented a challenge to the architects, in particular in relation to the interaction and coordination of three distinct spaces coming together to function harmoniously.

The answer to this was found in their source of inspiration, the ‘Zen’ garden which is incorporated into a traditional Japanese home. These peaceful spaces of relaxation and reflection are an arrangement of carefully positioned rocks, a water element and sand or gravel raked into various patterns.  This ‘Zen’ identity was reinterpreted into the solid mass of the bar and a large dining table which represented the rocks. The earthy tone and the undulating ridges of the lowered ceiling of sound proofed MDF became the raked sand and gravel and the movement of rippling water. The resulting space adopted a sense of intimate luxury through the dark reflective surfaces and expertly placed lighting arrangements.

The design culminated in the separation of three distinct areas able to function within a single space without distraction. The cocktail bar, sushi bar and dining area operate both independently and as a single entity providing everything that one would expect from a luxurious early evening to late night wining and dining experience.
