It’s no secret that we have been following with fascination every spontaneous design project of Karina Wiciak, founder of the Polish practice of Wamhouse. Through the 12 part collection entitled ‘XII’, she has allowed her fantasy to run wild in the creation of these concept interiors. Papernia, which means Paper Mill in Polish, is her 9th design and like the others, we are blown away by her uninhibited imagination which is at play in the construction of an elegant interior created using cardboard as her main material.

With the powerful visual impact of a stage setting, the cardboard construction hints at an industrial element, sustainable, temporary and remarkably beautiful, the familiar cardboard tone is contrasted with stark white details. A familiar memory of a childhood game of finding an empty box and making it our own space,  a special place, private and exclusive, is brought to play in her VIP dining spaces within actual cardboard boxes. Classic chairs have box seats and the lamps, large and small are all made from cardboard, including the stunning gothic chandeliers. Razor blade shaped table screens refer to the cutting tool needed for handling the material.

Supplemented by wood and metal elements and a grand piano on a raised stage, there is a charming fairy tale vibe to Papernia, a very grown up version of a favourite childhood game! We can’t wait to see what Ms Wiciak comes up with for number ‘X’ of the ‘XII’ part collection, no doubt she will once again amaze us with her originality and very personal design aesthetic!
