There is nothing like the smell of freshly baked bread on a warm spring morning and the anticipation of enjoying a chunk of that crusty loaf spread with butter and fresh honey! Although the production of that beloved staple has been taken over by the method of mass production, in many countries, the tradition of the family bakery is still alive and well! One of these countries is Poland and in the town of Piaseczno, the Przystanek Piekarnia bakery is a family establishment founded in the late fifties, exhibiting a deep respect for the tradition and quality of the master baker. They recently handed the project of designing a basic blueprint of a design aesthetic which can be adapted to a series of individual interiors for their chain of stores, to the young Polish interior designer, Maciej Kurkowski.

Sincerity is an adjective which can be applied to the product and to the clean simple lines and materials used within the interior. A Blackboard covered wall, which will become a signature feature of each store, on which is written the products of the day, is matched with a wall of modular units of plywood in which the various types of bread are displayed in categories. A subtle form of lighting is enclosed in an industrial wire cage and suspended from black metal supports which suggest an honest industrial feel. Simple white tiles line the counter and remaining wall space which contrast with the weighty feel of the solid oak countertop.

Although a mere 25 sq.m., this welcoming retail space even has its own stainless steel oven for baking buns and cookies, filling the air with the enticing sweet smell which wafts through the door into the street outside, tempting passersby to enter and taste the delights on offer!
