The well known conference and entertainment complex of Jaarbeurs Utrecht in The Netherlands has undergone a makeover, resulting in the creation of a brand new complex which raises the bar in the design of communication venues. Visitors are invited to experience a virtual journey of discovery through the recently opened multi-functional flexible spaces of Supernova, conceived and designed by the innovative Rotterdam based practice of Liong Lie Architects, the four facilities which make up the 3.500sqm. space express the explosive dynamic energy of its namesake.

Aptly named Mission, Quest, Expedition and Progress, the concept of space travel has been incorporated into the design of Supernova which is made up of four conference halls including two smaller spaces seating up to 80 and two larger, one of a seating capacity of 454 and another of 460, the latter with the ability of becoming two independent venues. Each space is an out of this world environment, a futuristic setting, executed in a myriad of materials, reflective surfaces, LED strip lighting and rubber flooring. The journey begins in the foyer, a vibrant welcoming space which hints at what lies ahead. Acid colours and mysteriously concealed lighting guides the visitor to the comfortable modular seating and into the space age conference halls.

From a glossy stainless steel faced alien spaceship to the grey perforated surfaces of a contemporary industrial area, complete with a whirling ceiling fan, throughout there is a sense of flow, energy and movement. Space capsules and engine rooms, are referenced within this amazing design which all goes to prove that conference venues need not be soulless places but halls of communication and learning through the immersive environment of this state of the art centre!
