Szwalnia, Polish for ‘sewing room’, is an interior design concept for a bar/restaurant, by Karina Wiciak of Wamhouse. The installation is the 8th in a 12 part collection of imaginative concept designs entitled ‘XII’ which Ms Wiciak intends to complete within a 12 month period.

By allowing her interests to become fantasies and translate these into a physical form, the designer creates interiors in uniquely surrealistic interpretations, in this case, a sewing room. Every aspect of the world of dressmaking and tailoring is represented symbolically in the surfaces, furniture and decorative items within the installation. Cotton spools adorn a wall of ‘sewn together’ scraps of ‘material’ using bold black tacking stitches, pins are employed in the legs of pincushion stools, backs of chairs and even the handrail on the stairs.

Pretty tasseled suspended lights and swathes of draped electric blue fabric contrast with the ice white background in this whimsical design. Drawing on elements of scenography and architectural design, this concept space is able to be adapted to a more practical version in a variety of ways, a truly unique idea which makes us sit on the edge of our seats and wondering what the designer will come up with next!
