A tourist information center in the Black Forest region of Baiersbronn was given a unique makeover by the practice of Partner und Partner Architekten. The 160 sq.m. space is entirely defined by what appears to be a pile of wood 15.5 meters long and 2.4 meters wide!

On closer inspection the woodpile is constructed of carefully cut and positioned pieces of locally sourced timber to create a ‘map’ of the surrounding valley of Baiersbronn. This gives the visitors to the center a wonderful tactile experience of being able to virtually follow trails and plan their excursions in the area.

Boxes have been positioned within the installation where information and photographs of the region taken at various times of the year can be found. An opening in the woodpile leads to a private office space behind which also connects to an upper level. At night the space is illuminated, connecting it to the market place outside. A local glass-making factory have provided the space with custom designed, glass lighting fixtures which hang over the reception desk and the nearby reading lounge.
