Architects WORKac worked in close collaboration with the owners over a four year plus period on the design of the White Street Loft apartment redesign. The result is a stunning urban space with multi-functional aspects and light hearted features which fulfill the needs of the four member family who own the apartment.

Covering an area of 6000sqf on 3 levels, full ground, half a basement and one third of a sub basement, the front to rear ground level was sectioned into strips to determine the purpose of each space, the living area at the front and the 2 children’s bedrooms in the rear. The low level Japanese style tables in the living room may be used as a stage or a dance floor for the family, who love to entertain. The kitchen and dining areas are connected to the living room by a series of tables which may be joined together to form a runway where the fashion designer’s collection is shown twice a year. The rear ceilings have been adjusted to raise the heights of the lower levels to accommodate the Master bedroom and Nanny and guestrooms.

Other features are a fabric lined room for relaxation with a sleeping loft for the children’s sleepovers, a translucent bridge, connecting the Master bedroom to an enormous closet and an elevator which has been named “Stitchevator” after the family dog. Skylights and a ventilation shaft, known as “The Void”, ensure that natural daylight enters the apartment and at the rear is an outdoor courtyard with a small garden and even a chicken-coop!
