The incredibly diverse cultural scene which thrives in Athens never ceases to thrill and amaze us! Every taste is catered to and the venues are countless, from a field off the National Road which has hosted the icons of Rock to downtown underground venues, with legendary fame in the Punk scene. The classics have the choice of several spaces from the ancient to the contemporary, each one of the highest standard and on a par with the finest theatres in the world, as a whole, they create an enviably eclectic infrastructure of cultural venues.
One of the most contemporary venues for quality performances is the Onassis Cultural Centre, it is here on the main stage, an impressive 880 seat amphitheater, that James Thierree presents his fifth and most recent production Tabac Rouge, from 22nd-24th November, 2013. A spectacular production for the young and old, it promises to leave the audience with a sense of wonder, awestruck by what they have seen, they will leave the theatre as devoted fans of the talented Mr. Thierree! Almost impossible to define, Tabac Rouge narrates the story of a king, a man with absolute power, a master of all he sees, he directs his subjects, dancers and contortionists, to perform upon a set of fantastic props, cables, lights and constantly moving mirrors creating a surreal, dream like scenario. The choreography of Tabac Rouge changes course from his previous productions, no longer concentrating on the circus as the main theme, in addition this is also the first production in which he does not take the leading role.
The grandson of Charlie Chaplin and the great grandson of Eugene O’Neill, James Thierree carries with him an impressive lineage. He spent his formative years in a travelling circus with his parents, Victoria Chaplin and Jean Baptiste Thierree, accomplished circus performers, a profession which he also followed for several years. So exactly what is he, a showman, a performer, and artist or an inventor? It is difficult to categorize a man with such a vast array of boundless talent and eccentric vision, not to mention a taste for the weird and wonderful as he will prove to anyone fortunate enough to be at the Onassis Cultural Centre on the evenings of 22nd-24th November 2013!
