Tower Studio if one of six studios on Fogo Island, Newfoundland, designed by the Norwegian firm, Saunders Architecture. Commissioned by Shorefast Foundation and Fogo Island Arts Corporation, as an economic and creative initiative to revive the small island community of just 3.000 inhabitants.

The 50 sqm. tower like structure stands dramatically by the sea in a rugged landscape. Access to the building from the main road is by means of a narrow boardwalk, initially constructed to protect the delicate ecosystem of the area. Each facade of the 3 storey concrete and wood structure is different, presenting an interesting aspect from every point. The ground floor serves as a residence and the upper floor is a studio space with a single triangular multi-paned window and skylight which illuminates the room with a soft diffused northern light, the most popular light with artists. A terrace offers breathtaking views of the striking landscape as well as additional studio space for the artist in residence.
