The i-cube project is a series of compact ‘off the peg’ houses designed by Shinji Kogo of Rats Architects based in Oita, Japan. This is the third construction in the series which has been built in Usuki, Japan.

A common feature of these homes is the cube shape with small symmetrical windows on each facade. In spite of the limitations of the floor space, a mere 79.3m2, the interior is surprisingly spacious. Generous living and dining areas are to be found on the upper level in addition to a mezzanine floor in the kitchen which houses a Japanese-style room overlooking the central light-well.

The main source of light and ventilation is from the central light-well in which openings have been set ensuing maximum natural light and air will enter the building. Additional features of these homes are the centrally located patio area on the ground floor and the small balcony on the upper level.
