Located in Seongbuk-dong, a densely populated area of Seoul, the Korean design practice of BANG by MIN, led by architect Sae Min Oh, were responsible for the award winning design of H-House. As the house which had previously stood on the building site had had problems with ventilation and natural lighting, the client specifically wished this problem to be addressed in the current home. Furthermore, he asked that the design  be suitable for his extended family of three generations and that a commercial space be built in the basement for the ‘Miega’ beauty store.

All of the client’s specifications were fulfilled within the design of the 403 sqm multi-level structure. Through the incorporation of a central courtyard, terraces and vast expanses of glazing in communal spaces, adequate lighting and ventilation reached every part of the interior. The second floor was allocated as a communal living space from which, through a series of folding doors and walls, a number of flexible areas were created to accommodate each member of the family and to allow for any future changes in the their needs. In addition, the basement became a retail space and as a ‘green’ bonus, the roof terrace was planted with grass for further insulation.

Simple materials of exposed concrete and mud coloured wooden panels perfectly complement the contemporary geometric design of the building, a bold design of which the up and coming young architects are justifiably proud!
