This spectacular holiday home is situated within a high end residential complex overlooking a lake in Bangkok, Thailand. The design practice of THE XSS were commissioned with the task of creating an interior which would prove to be a sanctuary for the occupants, a place close to nature with the essence of Shambhala, a mythical kingdom referred to in Buddhist texts, in which all within can unload their stress and open their hearts and minds to embrace spiritual enlightenment.

The extensive transparencies of the two level home admit the lakeside view into the space, visually dissolving the indoor/outdoor elements and making them come together as one united space. The feel of nature is enhanced at every turn emphasizing the flow of energy within the cool neutral palette of the minimal interior. The unexpected splashes of color are introduced in the random coverings of walls of furnishings, avoiding the ultra-stilted feel of pure luxury but rather allowing the design aesthetic to verge from the conventional to the unconventional.

Throughout the spaces there is a balance between functionality and aesthetics, placing the serenity and peace of mind of the residents at the peak of importance. Another vital factor within the design was not ignored, and that is the ‘green’ element. This was addressed automatically in the breezy lakeside location, a natural air flow reducing the need for air conditioning, solar heating systems and a water recycling system through a tank based irrigation method.
